6 incredible gigs and festivals in Hull this summer

This city is going to be buzzing. Here are just a few of the live music events you can’t miss in summer 2017.

Festival season 2017 is just around the corner. And while you could go and sleep in a field for a weekend, living off pot noodles and £10 cheesy chips, there’s another way to get into the festival spirit this summer.

There’s a whole season of gigs and festivals coming up across Hull and East Yorkshire this year, that frankly you’d be daft to miss out on.

These are just a couple of the highlights coming up in summer ‘17.

Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott: Beauty in the East + The Divine Comedy + Billy Bragg

£28.50. 3 June. KCOM Craven Park.

Local heroes and stars of The Beautiful South / The Housemartins, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott return to Hull for this massive headline show. Expect some classic tracks from your misspent youf.

The Divine Comedy and Billy Bragg complete the line-up. Where else would you find such high-calibre support acts? Hull, that’s where.

Humber Street Sesh

£10 adv, £15 otd. 5 August. Hull Marina.

Barely needs an introduction. This multi-award winning grassroots live music festival takes over the beautiful Hull Marina every year, and has made its name giving unsigned acts a chance to shine. 2017’s Humber Street Sesh is going to be bigger than ever, with hundreds of bands playing on 14 different stages.

A real jewel in Hull’s cultural crown. And it’s only a tenner.

Flaming Lips + Public Service Broadcasting

£32.50. 24 June. Zebedee’s Yard.

Do You Realize?? that this is going to be one of the highlights of the summer? Well, it is. Flaming Lips are bringing their freaky psychedelia to Hull and it’s going to melt your mind. Fresh from a brand new collaboration with Miley Cyrus, this is one of only a handful of Flaming Lips UK shows this year.

Tireless innovators Public Service Broadcasting support, chopping up archive sounds, remixing and setting to music. With banjos and flugelhorns and synths.

Primal Scream + Echo & The Bunnymen

£35. 23 June. Zebedee’s Yard.

Alt-indie-rock-acid-house legends Primal Scream are ticking off a select few festival dates this summer, and this Zebedee’s Yard show is quite clearly going to be the best one. Guaranteed to be one of the biggest parties of the summer.

Oh, and Echo & The Bunnymen are on the bill too. No big deal. Just the post-punk visionaries behind The Killing Moon who fundamentally changed the sound of the ‘80s and ‘90s. No biggy.

Tidal Waves Beach Festival

From £16. 9-10 June. Bridlington South Cliff Beach.

Grassroots local talent join national headline acts at this two-day festival in sunny Brid. Enigma, Reverend and the Makers and The Hoosiers top the bill, at what promises to be a musical extravaganza on the beach. Ride a donkey, get some fish and chips, then throw down some shapes.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO

From £35. 1 July. KCOM Stadium.

Hold the Telephone Line. Prog rock royalty Jeff Lynne is bringing his huge Electric Light Orchestra back-catalogue to the KCOM Stadium for an evening dedicated to the conceptual, the classical and the camp.
