Are you a Revolutionary Maker?

Create your own piece of ‘craftivism’ with artist Alinah Azadeh for WOW Hull.

WOW Hull is a festival of talks, debates, music, film, comedy and activism for everyone. It’s also a place to celebrate women and girls, take a frank look at what stops them from achieving their potential; a place to inspire, to interrogate and to bring about change.

Presented in partnership with Southbank Centre, London, WOW Hull will take place between Friday 10 March and Sunday 12 March at Hull City Hall, in Queen Victoria Square.

Here’s our Revolutionary Makers lead artist Alinah Azadeh, who has all the info on how you can get involved …

My name is Alinah Azadeh and as an artist, I’ve always been inspired by the pioneering, creative campaigns of the suffragettes and, more recently, the growing movement of craftivism (crafting in the service of social, political or environmental change) and artivism (art-making for the same purpose). I am the lead artist on Revolutionary Makers – a project that invites communities to celebrate the history of craft through a large-scale installation at Hull City Hall as part of WOW Hull.

I would like to invite you to become a Revolutionary Maker by joining in and creating conversation around gender equality and laying the ground for social action on change. You can help play your part by creating your own inspiring and thought-provoking hand-crafted art work – either in a group or on your own. Whether you decide to make badges, brooches, wristbands the options are endless. They could be printed, sewn, stitched, woven, image transferred, whatever you like!

The pieces will be inspired by what there is to celebrate and what there is to change, as well as Hull’s historical, often unseen, trailblazers.

At the end of WOW Hull, the pieces will be gifted to whoever comes to claim and wear them to further the cause and create conversation with those you meet throughout the rest of the year.

So how do you get involved?

There will be three workshops where members of community groups, school teachers/assistants, and anyone else who would like to find out more can come along and get inspired.

The workshops will begin by introducing the project, show example pieces that may inspire you and also demonstrate how to have a go at making something yourself. You will get the chance to meet others (no skills required and all materials supplied) and you will be supplied with take-away guidelines you can share with others.

The workshops will take place on:

14 February, 10am12pm at Bransholme Library, Goodhart Road, Hull, HU7 4EF

28 February, 7-9pm at Lydia’s Cake Away, Newland Avenue, Hull, HU5 3BE

1 March, 10am 12pm at the Freedom Centre, 97 Preston Rd, Hull, HU9 3QB

The workshops are free and informal, but booking is strongly advised as spaces are limited.
