The UK’s biggest poetry and performance festival of new writing is back

The BBC’s Contains Strong Language is a partnership with Absolutely Cultured, Wrecking Ball Press, Arts Council England, 14-18 NOW and the British Council. It looks to build on the huge success of the inaugural festival last year, taking place between 28th and 30th September. In total there will be more than 30 events across 3 days from leading poets and world class spoken word artists with coverage on local and national radio and TV.

Hull has been chosen as the location for the festival due to its vibrant, creative and innovative reputation, as well as providing important continuity and legacy for Hull 2017. Originally planned to return in 2019, the interest and excitement from last year forced a re-think!

Although all the tickets for free events across the weekend are not released until Friday 24th, tickets are currently available for both Gruff Rhys and Leonard Cohen Is My Spirit Guide (A Celebration of Leonard Cohen).

Gruff Rhys is a Welsh musician, composer, producer, filmmaker and author. He performs solo and with several bands, including Super Furry Animals, won the 2011 Welsh Music Prize and recently composed a song to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS.

Leonard Cohen – novelist, poet and one of the greatest singer songwriters ever to grace the planet – inspired generations of artists. Compered by Kerry Shale: a stellar troupe of musicians, including Mercury Music Prize nominee Kathryn Williams, offer their own take on Cohen’s music and poetry.

As part of the Contains Strong Language programme, Absolutely Cultured will commission and produce a new site-specific piece written by Louise Wallwein. Home Town Story is a captivating theatrical journey through the back streets of Hull. Audiences will gather to embark on a journey of discovery of Hull’s lesser known places and the stories of its characters along the way, meeting poets, wordsmiths and artists en route who will bring the poetry to life.

Most events are free, ticketed.  To book tickets visit the Event Brite website.
