The Creativity of Commerce: A Study of Hull

Hull 2017 Business Club members Smailes Goldie Group celebrate the creativity of our city with a new exhibition.

Hull has been one the key commercial centres of the UK for hundreds of years, from its founding as a port city by monks nearly a millennia ago, to its modern re-imagining as one of the UK’s leading innovators in a number of high tech industries.

Creativity and culture have gone hand-in-hand with commerce in this city, and as one of Hull’s largest and oldest independent accountancy firms we have borne witness to its many changing fortunes and tastes.

This great city of commerce has often relied on and benefited from the forward-thinking approach of its population, not only in its business dealings, but also in its offerings to the worlds of art and music.

With this in mind, we are delighted to be one of the many fantastic businesses in this great city to be supporting Hull UK City of Culture 2017.

The people of Hull have never struggled to come up with unique solutions, which in many cases have helped spark revolutions across the UK.

The cities great names in the world of culture include the likes of internationally renowned poets such as Philip Larkin, Sir Andrew Motion and Roger McGough and of course the city’s most famous musicians The Housemartins and Mick Ronson – guitarist for David Bowie.

However, while many have reflected on Hull’s past, we hope to shine the spotlight on the next generation of artists.

We are proud to be working in partnership with Hull College students to create a unique installation which will demonstrate the creativity of commerce.

On 4 May 2017 we opened up our offices in Regent’s Court, Princess Street for the launch of this installation, which is made of pieces created by the talented mature students.

It was opened by Rosie Millard, the Chair of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, with the aim of recognising the important role that ingenuity has played in Hull’s history of enterprise and commerce, and its ongoing importance in the future.

The event was attended by some of Hull’s leading businesses, many of whom recognise the importance of developing future creativity within the city.

There will now be opportunities for members of the public to come to our offices and view these fantastic pieces.

This project is part of a larger pledge by the team at Smailes Goldie Group which will see us work closely with the college and its students for many years to come, as part of our commitment to legacy projects arising from this and the three years in which Hull will retain the UK City of Culture title before passing it on to the next successful location.

We are always looking to nurture innovation within our own firm and in the businesses of our clients and we could think of no better way than by supporting this year of celebrations through our association with the Hull 2017 Business Club.

Hull has a bright and prosperous road ahead of it and its recognition as a centre of leading edge ideas cements its position as one Britain’s most important cities.

We hope that our support of Hull UK City of Culture 2017 provides a fantastic opportunity to the region’s future business leaders, artists, musicians, poets and innovators.
