Rejoice! The bank holiday weekend is in sight!

As we move from our Freedom season into Tell The World, let’s look at what the next week has in store.

COTTINGHAM FOLK FESTIVAL

24 – 27 Aug, various times (£25 – £105)
The Civic Hall & The Darby and Joan Hall, Cottingham

Dig out your dancing shoes for Cottingham Folk Festival, taking place over the bank holiday weekend. This year’s festival features live music from a stellar line-up, including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Scott Matthews and Lucy Spraggan.

CELEBRATING THE BANTU PEOPLE

26 Aug, from 1pm (Free)
Thorpes Resource Centre, Orchard Park

Discover Bantu culture at this unique roadshow, funded as part of the Hull 2017 Creative Communities Programme. Learn about the Bantu people of Central and Southern Africa, from their foods to their crafts, with the Bantu people who now call Hull their home. Come sample life south of the equator in Africa through food, music and dance.

WILBERFORCE – WHO WAS THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMPAIGN?

29 Aug, 2pm (Free)
Wilberforce House Museum

Hull’s founding father of freedom, William Wilberforce fought for the abolition of the slave trade in the early 19th century. Discover some of the lesser-known details about his life with this short family-friendly tour around his birthplace, led by the man himself!

CURTIS ELLER’S AMERICAN CIRCUS

31 Aug, 8pm (£10 – 12)
The New Adelphi Club

Banjo player, songwriter and singer, Curtis Eller relentlessly tours the US and Europe with his cast of misfits, The American Circus. The latest version of the ensemble is a brutish and inelegant rock & roll outfit specialising in banjo music for funerals, gospel tunes for atheists and novelty dance fads.

FREEDOM FESTIVAL

1 – 3 Sep, (£ various)
Hull City Centre

Freedom Festival is an annual cultural highlight here in Hull. To celebrate its tenth anniversary this year, Freedom Festival are hosting a carnival like no other, to be enjoyed and remembered by all. This year’s spectacular line-up showcases the best in street theatre, dance, and acrobatics, alongside panel debates and quirky exhibitions.

THE SUITCASE

Hull Truck Theatre

A gripping tale with dramatic twists and unexpected turns. The Suitcase follows a young South African couple, heading to the city of Durban to make their fortune. Unemployed and unable to provide for a new family, Timi steals a suitcase; an act which brings frightening consequences into his life.

ONE DAY, MAYBE

Hull City Centre

Global pioneers of site-responsive performance, dreamthinkspeak create extraordinary and unforgettable audience journeys.

One Day, Maybe will draw audiences deep into a technological labyrinth; inviting audiences to explore the private areas, offices and laboratories of a mysterious new Korean technology company in Hull city centre.
