Hull Jazz Festival: the youth are coming

Hull Jazz Festival is spreading the love this year giving local children and young people the chance to get involved.

Hull Jazz Festival is giving young people the chance to get involved with its 25th anniversary festival this November as gig goers and performers. Think household classics to sing along to and opportunities to see the young local jazz scene in full swing.

If you grew up loving Disney films then chances are there’s at least one jazz song that you love belting out the lyrics to. The Jungle Book, Lady and The Tramp, The Aristocats, Toy Story, Aladdin – they’ve all got great jazz numbers that you can’t help singing or shimmying along to. Zoe Gilby’s Family Jazz All-Stars (Sat 18 Nov) presents just this.

Taking over the Studio at Hull Truck, expect a whistle-stop tour of jazz favourites from over the years. It’s a family show packed full of songs you’ll know and love, with a couple of Disney favourites, If I Only Had A Brain from the Wizard of Oz and classics by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald.

They’ll be performing some new, original material too (and we’ve heard rumours of audience participation), showing that jazz isn’t just about the old standards, it’s about exciting new music waiting to be written. Suitable for children aged 5 and above, and with family tickets available, it’s the perfect way to introduce the younger members of the family to great live music.

A couple of shows are putting the spotlight on local talent too. Young guitarists from Maybury School have been working with Chris Montague, one of the UK’s most interesting and innovative guitarists, as part of A Brief History of the Coolest Instrument in the World (Sat 11 Nov). They’ll be performing alongside Chris and his band at the Albemarle Music Centre, celebrating 80 years of the electric guitar in popular music. There will be jazz and blues, with some good old-fashioned rock’n’roll and some kick-ass rock riffs thrown in for good measure.

Young musicians from Hull Youth Jazz Orchestra, St Mary’s College, Kelvin Hall School, South Hunsley School and East Riding Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform alongside Nu Civilisation Orchestra in A Journey with the Giants of Jazz.  The show’s part of The Jazz Ticket, a national project led by Tomorrow’s Warriors. It’s aimed at introducing young musicians to jazz and improvisation through the music of six giants of the jazz world who were born in 1917.

Expect songs by Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Tadd Dameron, Mongo Santamaria, Buddy Rich and Thelonious Monk: all pioneers whose influence lives on in the music we listen to today. Through working with Tomorrow’s Warriors and Nu Civilisation Orchestra, young local musicians are getting the chance to collaborate with some of the artists who are blazing a trail in today’s jazz scene.

Learning from and performing with artists they can hear on the radio or see performing on TV is giving these young musicians the chance to really push themselves musically and go for it. And, who knows, there could be a future MOBO winner on the stage at Hull Truck in a couple of weeks…

Full details of Hull Jazz Festival’s 25th Anniversary programme, including £6 tickets for students and under-26s, can be found here.
