The winning photographs of Hull will be printed on beermats at pubs and clubs around the city.
A new photography festival and competition showcasing Hull will launch next month to develop photography skills within the region and turn traditional exhibition style on its head. The Hull Beermat Photography Festival will include four creative workshops along with the chance to have your work exhibited on beermats in watering holes around the city.
The competition opens on Saturday 9 September and winners will be selected by world-renowned photographer Martin Parr on Wednesday 15 November from 7pm in Kardomah94. To enter, all you have to do is upload a photograph to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook using #HullPhoto2017.
Festival organiser Graeme Oxby said: “Forget white cubes, silent galleries and DO NOT TOUCH signs. Instead, picture images of Hull, submitted via Instagram and printed onto beermats strewn across the tables of the city’s pub, clubs and venues. Touch them. Critique them. Or simply just enjoy them – and maybe a pint or two, too.”
Coinciding with the competition will be a series of free photography workshops led by Dougie Wallace, Lottie Davies, Verity Harr and Graeme Oxby. They are open to all levels of photographer and cover street photography, travel photography, smartphone photography and getting the best from your DSLR camera. Tickets for these workshops will be available soon.
The Hull Beermat Photography Festival is funded by Hull 2017’s Creative Communities Programme (CCP) and will take launch at the end of our Freedom season before continuing into our Tell The World season, celebrating the qualities that makes our city stand apart from the crowd.
Martin Green, director of Hull 2017, said: “What an amazing way to get people out and about and taking pictures. The great thing about this project and the whole of the CCP programme is that anybody can take part and let their creativity run wild. The idea of displaying the winners on beermats is brilliant and I’m sure they will create lots of discussion and buzz in pubs and clubs throughout the city.”
