Creatures on wheels, walkers on stilts, giant puppets and hundreds of handmade costumes – just some of the sights you can feast your eyes upon at The Extraordinary Orchard Park Parade, where everything is handmade with love and showcased by the residents of the Orchard Park Estate.
Taking place on Saturday 6 May, the project is led by local live arts specialists Hull Carnival Arts alongside Calderdale carnival experts Handmade Parade and Rag and Bone, a Huddersfield collective of creative people and performers.
From Wednesday 12 April, artists from each of these companies will deliver a series of free, creative workshops at St Michael’s Youth Project on Orchard Park Road. These workshops will continue on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday evenings throughout April and into May, providing local residents of all ages with the opportunity to be part of this fantastic family event.
Young people from local schools and community groups will also have the chance to get creative by contributing to the parade and learning to master the art of stilt-walking.
It’s about bringing lots of different people together to make a brilliant spectacle that can be enjoyed by all.
– Kerith Ogden, lead artist at Handmade Parade
Kerith Ogden, lead artist at Handmade Parade, said: “It’s about bringing lots of different people together to make a brilliant spectacle that can be enjoyed by all. Anyone can come and make their own costumes, flag, mask or puppet to feature in the procession. Our team of artists will share the skills and materials that will help bring ideas to life.”
The parade is one of 60 projects funded through the Hull 2017 Creative Communities Programme, which is being delivered in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund, a Principal Partner of Hull 2017.
Hull UK City of Culture 2017 director, Martin Green, said: “This is going to be a great event and one which the residents of Orchard Park Estate will be proud of. Creativity and artistic vision is rich in our communities. The Extraordinary Orchard Park Parade will be a fantastic platform to showcase this talent, a spectacle not to be missed.”
