Following an exciting partnership with ARTIST ROOMS, Ferens Art Gallery will welcome two incredible sculptures by acclaimed artist Ron Mueck as part of its reopening celebrations during the summer of 2017. A master of detail, Australian-born Mueck is recognised across the world for his ultra-realistic sculptures that replicate the human body in exaggerated or miniature forms.
Visitors to the showcase will get up close and personal with two of Mueck’s 2005 sculptures, Wild Man and Spooning Couple, in which each of the subjects demonstrate the unique sense of vulnerability that has become a trademark of the artist over the years.
The showcase in Hull will be a first for Mueck, who shot onto the radar when his iconic sculpture, Dead Dad, featured alongside the work of art legends Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin at the Royal Academy’s 1997 Sensation exhibition. Since then, his career has gone from strength to strength, with numerous global exhibitions and an Associate Artist position at the National Gallery under his belt.
At the helm of the collaboration is ARTIST ROOMS, an impressive collection of international contemporary art owned by the National Galleries of Scotland and the Tate following a whopping donation by art collector, Andrew d’Offay. ARTIST ROOMS On Tour was born out of a dream to connect millions of people across the UK with some of these inspiring pieces of art, and the team have worked with young volunteers at Ferens Art Gallery to produce something special.
“The Future Ferens volunteers are really excited about Ron Mueck’s, ARTIST ROOMS exhibition coming to Hull in our year as UK City of Culture 2017. We are all really inspired by Ron’s lifelike sculptures of the human figure and are particularly interested in his meticulous working process. We look forward to working with gallery staff to help promote this exhibition to a broad audience, especially young people. ”

The presence of such an established artist is just one of many spectacular exhibitions and commissions set to wow the city as Ferens Art Gallery relaunches after a £4.5 million investment. With Spencer Tunick’s Sea of Hull and the prestigious Turner Prize yet to come, there’s plenty to look forward to!
