Gallery: The Big Malarkey Festival

Last week, thousands of Hull children took over East Park for The Big Malarkey Festival, celebrating creativity, storytelling and make-believe. The free festival brought together some of the best authors, illustrators, poets, theatre-makers and musicians for an experience to remember, transforming the park into a magical tented world where imaginations ran wild.

Among the highlights was an inspirational talk by newly-crowned Waterstones Children’s Laureate Lauren Child, known for her bestselling Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort book series. The hilarious comedian-turned-author Julian Clary stopped by with illustrator David Roberts to chat all about their new book series The Bolds, whilst children’s illustrator Lydia Monks drew live sketches of the audience and rapper and poet Akala schooled us in Shakespeare.

Away from the famous faces, the festival was a hive of arts and crafts, fancy dress, music-making and even featured a fully-costumed parade led by Hull Carnival Arts before the grand finalé – the Storybook Ball.

We’ve pulled together some of our favourite snaps from the week.
