Hull theatre makers head to the capital

Hull theatre company Middle Child Theatre are showcasing their work in London next week, taking their award-winning show Weekend Rockstars to the Battersea Arts Centre.

Winner of the Musical Theatre Network’s Development Award at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Weekend Rockstars defies conventional genres. Best described as an ‘album play’, with the cast performing live music throughout, the show is an unapologetic story of three 20-somethings from Hull. It’s a riotous journey through the highs and lows of living for the weekend, and just one example of Middle Child’s pioneering approach to creating theatre that breaks down the traditional barriers that can often discourage people from going to the theatre.

The company aim to make ‘theatre that our mates would enjoy’, explains Paul Smith, Artistic Director of Middle Child. ‘We are extremely passionate about cultivating new audiences and convincing people who are apathetic about this particular art form that theatre can be for them – it can be as electric as a night out at a gig.’

Formed at the University of Hull, Middle Child’s shows are made in Hull (and proud of it). As Paul puts it: ‘This tour allows us to continue this work on a national level while proving to people that there are many must-see events happening in Hull ahead of the City of Culture year.’

‘The showcase is a great opportunity for us to show people who haven’t seen our work before what we’re about. We want to be an important part of the conversation demonstrating that Hull really is the place to be in 2017 and beyond.’

Martin Green, CEO and director of Hull 2017, says: ‘We’re delighted to be working with such a ground-breaking theatre company and proud to be showcasing their work to a wider audience. Getting unique, great work out of Hull and around the country is part of what Hull 2017 is all about. Shows like Weekend Rockstars demonstrate perfectly that Hull is, and always has been, a great City of Culture.’
