Hull Truck Youth Theatre, the company behind sell-out shows Our Mutual Friend and Defiance, have joined forces with three of Hull’s brilliant, independent theatre companies.
Fresh from success locally and at the likes of Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Bellow Theatre (Bare Skin On Briny Waters), The Roaring Girls (Weathered Estates) and Silent Uproar (A Super Happy Story About Feeling Super Sad) are part of Hull Truck Theatre’s Supported Companies, and will each work with around 15 Youth Theatre members to create unique productions based on the young peoples’ ideas.
The productions will include What About The Children, a Bellow Theatre ‘Him and Her’ tale of friendship, knee grazes and old school crisps (written by the theatre’s own Maureen Lennon), which will feature in a double bill with The Roaring Girls’ When Everything Stops – a devised piece based on the importance of time and using your voice, from 8 to 10 Mar.
Over at Silent Uproar – winners of the prestigious Fringe First Award in 2017 – Sunday Times award-winning playwright Josh Overton explores the systems we put young people through on the rocky path to adulthood with Human Electric Tree, running from 5 to 7 Apr.
Tom Bellerby, associate director of artist development and youth theatre, who commissioned the three productions, said: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring these companies together with our oldest Youth Theatre members to create three world premier productions that authentically explore what it is to be a young person in the world today. The Youth Theatre has built a reputation for creating artistically exciting work of an excellent quality”.
Patrick, a member of Hull Truck Youth Theatre working with The Roaring Girls, added: “Our show is based on the kind of honest conversations you have with friends at 3am, so to begin rehearsals we all sit around and have a chat. Then we boil it down to certain topics, and then create scenes based on them which then form the show. It’s very different to other Youth Theatre shows we’ve done because it’s all based on our own experiences rather than someone else’s script. It’s about what people our age want to say”.
