Since Smith & Nephew announced it would become a Major Partner of Hull 2017 in June 2016, every employee on the Hull site has had the opportunity to participate in a cultural activity, through tickets to shows, volunteering opportunities and events arranged on site.
During the summer, the global medical technology business surprised its employees with a “pop-up” art installation with help from local graffiti artists Spray Creative. Employees on the Hessle Road site (nearly 1,000 of them) were invited to harness their inner-Banksy by helping create a Smith & Nephew mural. Using stencils, and with guidance from the artists, employees were able to spray onto the mural, creating a mosaic and putting their very own stamp on the installation. Employees did such a great job that the impressive mural has since become a permanent fixture on the site.
Smith & Nephew has also been engaging its employees through Culture Clubs, including a photography club ran by local photographer Dr. Alec Gill M.B.E, an art club, a walking club and language cafés all run by volunteers within the business.
Competitions have been held in the short story, photography, art and poetry categories too. Open to family and friends of employees, the competition was judged by those involved in Hull 2017 with the winners receiving tickets to events.
The Company was also proud to sponsor Dr Alec Gill MBE and Paul Berriff’s photo exhibition, The Hessle Roaders: Hull’s Fishing Community.
On display at Hull History Centre throughout June as part of Hull 2017’s Roots & Routes programme, the exhibition featured a selection from over 6,600 striking images, documenting a close-knit community during a time of dramatic social change. It has since gone on to St. Giles Church and Hull Truck Theatre.
The city of Hull holds a special place in the history of Smith & Nephew. Supporting Hull UK City of Culture 2017 was a significant opportunity to reinforce its close links with the community that founded the global company over 160 years ago, to contribute to a lasting legacy that has raised the profile of this region, and to engage its employees during a year of exciting and meaningful events.
