Square Peg is a year-long arts programme, designed to open up new opportunities specifically for disabled artists and audiences in Hull. Led by Artlink and supported by Hull 2017, the project has created a number of new opportunities this year through exhibitions and events.
And looking ahead to 2018, the team behind the project have big plans. Supported by Hull 2017 and Shape Arts, Square Peg are inviting submissions from visual artists who are based in the North of England and identify as disabled to apply for funding, to create work that will be showcased at Artlink in Summer 2018.
The programme will offer the successful candidate a £3,500 grant for their time and materials, with additional support towards communications and transportation costs available. A panel of artists, curators and critics will draw up a shortlist, before empowering the successful applicant with financial support, as well as the platform to share their work.
Jeff Rowlings, Head of Programme at Shape Arts, said “This bursary is a great initiative – with disabled artists facing numerous barriers to progression, quality opportunities providing tailored support give them a genuine chance to flourish and move ahead.”
For many disabled audiences and artists, accessing the arts can be extremely problematic; this barrier-breaking initiative seeks tackle the stigma around disability arts, whilst creating a better understanding of what it is to be part of a largely unheard community.
Martin Green, director of Hull 2017, assures applicants that “This bursary offers a great opportunity for a northern artist that will not only see them receive financial assistance, but also from Hull’s Artlink to create their work. I am confident this bursary will help bring someone’s vision to life and continue to challenge people’s perceptions as Square Peg has done all year.”
Interested artists are asked to submit their outline proposal for the bursary, along with details on their artistic development and supporting information, via the portal on CuratorSpace here. The closing date for submissions is Friday 16 February 2018 at 5pm.
