Take a trip down memory lane with Why Couldn’t They Be Like We Were

Why Couldn’t They be Like We Were on the Marfleet estate looks back at how things were in the ‘70s and how it has changed since. The event focusses on key moments in people’s lives growing up in ‘70s Hull.

This look back through the decades is organised by community organisation Local Works with support from Creat-Hive and WGN Productions. The event, supported by Hull 2017’s Creative Communities Programme, will be the second in Why Couldn’t They Be Like We Were’s series of events marking how things have transformed through the decades.

The first event in June saw Marfleet reminisce about the ‘60s through local residents’ stories. Once again organisers are inviting residents to share and film their memories in the run-up to the event – this time remembering the 1970s.

Organiser Andy Burton said: “It’s great once again to be helping out and contributing on a project like this. The last one was a great success and this time we are even happier to be adding more creative content to the event to truly bring the Hull community together

There will be vintage fashion stalls and accessories, re-enactments of vintage games and bands playing your favourite 70s tunes, to make sure you’re fully transported back to the era. Also featured at the event will be a 70s inspired fashion showcase of local vintage traders and models.

Martin Green, Director of Hull 2017, said: “People living in Hull are justifiably proud of their city. This is reflected in many of the projects we are funding through our Creative Communities Programme, which is a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on communities all over Hull, like the people who have grown up in Marfleet.”
