Video: Celebrate Freedom with young poets from Hull

Earlier this year, pupils from from Collingwood, Alderman Cogan’s, St Mary Queen of Martyrs, and Ings took part in a series of literature workshops, encouraging them (and their teachers…) to read, write and create poetry.

The workshops were delivered by poets Chris McCabe, Sophie Herxheimer, Sarah Stutt, Shazea Quraishi, Kate Fox and Joseph Coeltto. The residency was arranged by Forward Arts Foundation as part of our No Limits learning programme.

To give the children a teaser of some of the poetic and literary fun they can expect in Hull on National Poetry Day (28 September), the six poets worked with each child to write a unique poem. The children then showcased their work at Jubilee Church in front of the other schools, friends and family.

The children’s poems will feature in a school poetry anthology for National Poetry Day which is organised by Forward Arts Foundation. The pupils’ freedom-themed poetry will contribute to the creation of resources for other schools to use nationwide, including images, how-to guides, films and toolkits.

National Poetry Day on 28 September will see Hull host dozens of high-profile poetry and spoken word events including Contains Strong Language, a new national spoken word and poetry festival delivered in partnership by Hull 2017, the BBC and Humber Mouth.
