Since announcing their major partnership with Hull 2017 back in June last year, the team at Smith & Nephew have been getting stuck into cultural initiatives, clubs and events.
Most recently, the global medical technology business surprised its employees with an opportunity to create a brand new art installation, with help from local graffiti artists Spray Creative.
Nearly 1,000 employees on the Hessle Road site were invited to harness their inner Banksy by helping create a Smith & Nephew mural. Using stencils, and with guidance from the artists, employees sprayed the mural, creating a mosaic and putting their very own stamp on the installation. Employees did such a great job that the impressive mural is set to become a permanent fixture on the site.

Smith & Nephew employee, Elliot Dixon, was excited to make his mark:
“It was great to contribute to a piece of artwork that is going to be on site for years to come. It is unlike anything I’ve seen before in a workplace and the fact that so many employees contributed to it gives it a much more personal touch. It’s great to see the company is committed to engaging with its employees.”
Spray Creative were eager to represent Smith & Nephew’s impact on the city of Hull, its heritage and some of its pioneering products. “We thoroughly enjoyed the event, the atmosphere was brilliant, everyone was in high spirits and everyone was keen to paint their part,” Ollie Marshall of Spray Creative said. “It was great to watch the passing faces of staff as the mural began to take shape.”
