To round out the Minghella retrospective, Hull History Centre and the University of Hull have assembled a display of artefacts giving an insight into Minghella’s time at Hull, and his illustrious career beyond the screen.

Visitors to the display will have the opportunity to see photographs documenting Minghella’s early acting roles during his time as an undergraduate student. They will also be able to read the offer of employment later issued to Minghella, an account written by Minghella himself of his teaching responsibilities in the Drama department, and a note sent from Minghella to Philip Larkin.

Minghella’s prolific and prestigious career as a playwright is captured in a series of programmes, posters and advertisements, including those for plays which received their first performance at the University of Hull: ‘Mobius the Stripper’ and ‘Whale Music’.

Minghella also found success in the world of opera, directing a production of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, which toured several countries. Visitors will get a rare glimpse at a series of visually arresting photographs which capture the planning of the design and look of Minghella’s colourful, stylised production.

The Minghella retrospective is a City of Culture event, delivered by the University of Hull, Hull 2017, and BFI/Film Hub North.

Please note – this exhibition will open at 3.30pm on Sunday 22 January.
