Summary

Humber Field Archaeology with the support of Historic England and Hull City Council invite you to the marking out of the walls of the C16th South Blockhouse.

This will reveal the location, shape and scale of the buried monument. Come and learn more about the South Blockhouse.

It coincides with Heritage Open Days in September and includes the marking out of the exact footprint of the old building, information about the South Blockhouse and its role in the defence of Hull from the 16th century onwards.

Archaeologists will be on hand to answer questions about the site too, any time between 10am-4pm.

About the South Blockhouse

The South Blockhouse was constructed on the east bank of the River Hull in the mid 16th century as part of new defences commissioned by Henry VIII. Archaeological work carried out in 1997 in connection with construction of the access road to The Deep aquarium proved that substantial and well‐preserved parts of the Blockhouse still survive close to the present ground level, with finds made then including an iron breech‐loading cannon, similar to those recovered from Henry’s sunken warship, The Mary Rose.
