Summary

Hull Independent Cinema presents: Christine

Antonio Campos | 2016 | UK / USA | 15 | 120 mins

Based on true events, Christine is the story of a Florida news reporter who, in 1974, shocked the world when her personal crises came to a head live on air.

Christine (Rebecca Hall), always the smartest person in the room at her local Florida news station, feels like she is destined for bigger things and is relentless in her pursuit of an on-air position in a larger market. As an aspiring newswoman with an eye for nuance and an interest in social justice, she finds herself constantly butting heads with her boss (Tracy Letts), who pushes for juicier stories that will drive up ratings.

Plagued by self-doubt and a tumultuous home life, Christine’s diminishing hope begins to rise when an on-air co-worker (Michael C. Hall) initiates a friendship which ultimately becomes yet another unrequited love. Disillusioned as her world continues to close in on her, Christine takes a dark and surprising turn. Based on true events, Campos’ intimate and sensitive portrait of a woman on the brink is grounded by Hall’s impeccable and transformative performance as Christine.

Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival among nominations and prizes at festivals from Los Angeles to Lisbon.

Christine is rated 15. Visit the BBFC website for full details (may include plot spoilers).

“Rebecca Hall gives one of the great performances of the year as the title character in Christine, an intense, stomach-churning, unblinking drama.” Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

“Rich in dramatic detail and psychological insight, the film approaches its protagonist with genuine concern.” Tirdad Derakhshani, Philadelphia Inquirer

The bar and cafe at Middleton Hall is open all day, so why not come along early to grab a drink and a snack? Doors to the screening room usually open around ten minutes before the performance starts.
