Summary

Dean Wilson returns to the university where he once worked in the post room and stood in line for Larkin’s inspection drills. Jean

Hartley, Larkin’s publisher, picked Dean out as one of the city’s top two current poets. His new collection Sometimes I’m So Happy I’m Not Safe on the Streets plumbs life in the city in rich new ways. He has invited three fellow writers to the debate and performance.

Praised for ‘his deceptively deadpan approach masking nice extravagances of language’, John Robinson wields language and rhythm to bring to the fore some aching stories that recover lives from the margins.

Joe Hakim’s poems sit brave in his collections, where you feel them strain to bounce across the stage and be heard. World–class performance poetry.

Vicky Foster’s Changing Tides brings us a new voice that’s born of Hull and yet older than it, measuring the weight of the rivers and the sea.

Using selected Larkin poems as a springboard for discussion, the evening features sets of the writer’s work, some newly minted for the evening. Writer Martin Goodman chairs what promises to be a classic night of Hull poetry.
