Summary

Experience the culmination of Open Bridges in Hull – the day that splits the city in two – with the world premiere of BAFTA award winning composer John Stead’s especially commissioned acousmatic music composition for Open Bridges 2017 ‘Moments in Time’.

The Open Bridges project explores the notion of freedom and freedom withheld during the Hull City of Culture Freedom Season.

Electro acoustic ensemble director, John Stead’s live première performance will be diffused in octophonic sound featuring found sounds recorded from Hull bridges movements and operations. The programme includes rare performances of musique concrète work by pioneers of electronic, electroacoustic and acousmatic music – Jean-Claude Risset’s Elementa and Francis Dhomont’s Cycle du Son.

Open Bridges: the autumnal equinox when day and night are equal, will be split in two for the first time in the city’s history denying movement across the river east or west, creating a symbolic wall to be reunited when the first bridge re-opens to road traffic. This can only happen in Hull as no other city has so many opening bridges over such a short distance of navigable river. A river journey by three historic vessels will take place and as the river journey ends the music begins.
