Summary

Freemasonry has existed for many hundreds of years and 2017 marks the tercentenary of the United Grand Lodge of England being formed. No less than five monarchs have been members of the Order, the most recent being King George VI, the father of our present Queen. The paper will endeavour to explain the history of freemasonry, dispel the myths attached to it, provide details of famous masons and explore the proven links with both Literary & Philosophical Societies and the city of Kingston-upon-Hull.

Jeff was born in Hull in 1943 and spent all of his early life in and around that City. He is married to Chris, has four sons and eight grandchildren.

Educated at Hymers College in Hull, Jeff briefly studied accountancy and after an early working life spent in the Port of Hull, was recruited to a consultancy contract with the Saudi Ports Authority. This resulted in an absence of 10 years whilst working in the Middle East and Far East. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1986, joining a family firm specialising in logistics where he was Managing Director of the Company until retiring in January 2009.

A Freemason for more than 40 years, Jeff was appointed Provincial Grand Master of the Masonic Province of Yorkshire North & East Ridings by The Grand Master, HRH the Duke of Kent, in 2013. The Province stretches from Middlesbrough on the Tees in the North to Kingston-upon-Hull on the Humber in the South and he is responsible for almost 4,000 Freemasons meeting in 98 Lodges.
