The City of Culture archive: Sharing with the World what was ‘Made in Hull’ – Simon Wilson

The talk will highlight progress to date, reflecting on success and lessons learnt, the range and extent of content that we have secured and touch on some of the issues we need to address before we can make it available to the world.

Working closely with the University’s Culture, Place and Policy Institute the archive seeks to appeal to academic audiences but also to a public which has demonstrated a huge appetite for engaging with culture. We also want to ensure that the legacy and momentum from 2017 is not lost and hope that the archive itself will inspire and enable new creative works.

Simon is University Archivist at the University of Hull, based at the Hull History Centre. He has worked in a wide range of archive institutions in the local government, higher education and charity sectors – often on externally funded projects with emphasis on making archives more widely available to users. Joining the University in 2008 he was heavily involved in the move of the collections to their new home at the Hull History Centre which opened in January 2010. Simon was seconded for two years to the AIMS Project – a collaboration with the Universities of Stanford, Virginia and Yale – that sought to identify commonality in processing born-digital archives. The four project partners shared their experiences in their White Paper published in 2012 advocating good practice with regard to born-digital material. Simon was appointed University Archivist in August 2015 and currently leads a team of five staff.
