Industry. Innovation. Change.

Complex Relationships features stories about fathers and sons, the last colliery in Yorkshire and a young girl struggling with her upbringing. These films look at the breadth and dynamic nature of family relationships. They also offer a glimpse into the intricacy of the domestic whilst underpinning identity in the modern age from a northerner in London to a family in crisis.

At the Complex Relationships night, the Q&A session includes each of the directors of the four films on show – Chris Shepherd, Harry Sherriff, Ruth Grimberg and Ashley Dean.

Each Shorts of Substance programme will include a hosted Q&A and panel discussion around the theme of the film programme with the filmmakers and special guests.

Shorts of Substance is curated by Aesthetica Short Film Festival and presented in partnership with Hull Independent Cinema and Substance.

Substance is a new festival celebrating the culture, creativity and future of the North.

Creative visionaries, mavericks and the next generation of artistic iconoclasts descend on Hull to ask questions about the future of arts and culture and the role they play in places like Hull.

Does arts-led regeneration exist? What exactly are the creative industries? Has the digital revolution democratised arts and are we all curators now? And most importantly, what happened in the past 11 months and what does it mean for the future?

Venues across Hull city centre play host to discussions, film screenings, debates, unique installations and the next generation of artworks and performances.

Substance is presented by Hull UK City of Culture 2017 and takes place in early December 2017.

See all the films as part of Shorts of Substance Film Festival at a discounted rate of £10. Present your ticket for your pass at the first screening you attend to collect your tickets. To purchase the pass click here.
