Summary

An illustrated talk by Barbara English and Margaret Pinder.

In 1642, King Charles I travelled from Beverley to Hull’s Beverley Gate to demand admittance to the town. What game-changing prize did he want there? The refusal to admit him was the first hostile act of the wars, which were to change England for ever.

Discover the different aspects of Hull and Beverley in the years leading up to the Civil Wars. Explore C16th and C17th maps of Hull and the East Riding, plus plans newly discovered in national collections and travellers’ descriptions and government records to reveal Hull’s history.

This talk will take place at:
Hull History Centre, Worship Street, Hull, HU2 8BG. Wed 19 July, 2 – 4 pm.
Beverley Treasure House, Champney Rd, Beverley HU17 8HE. Wed 26 July, 2 – 4 pm.
