What is the Turner Prize?
The Turner Prize is one of the world’s most renowned art prizes, awarded annually by Tate to an artist who has exhibited outstanding work in the previous year. The four shortlisted artists for 2017 will exhibit their work at Ferens Art Gallery in Hull from September 2017 to January 2018, with the overall winner announced in early December.
The artworks included in the Turner Prize 2017 exhibition will cover all kinds of artistic media, including film, painting and installation. Through these pieces of art, the exhibition will show us a diverse range of experiences and voices, illustrating the way that art can reflect the world and challenge our preconceptions.
Working in artistic genres from portraiture to landscape to still life, the four artists will all explore how art responds to political and social upheaval.
Who are the four shortlisted artists for 2017?
The four shortlisted artists for Turner Prize 2017 are Hurvin Anderson, Andrea Büttner, Lubaina Himid and Rosalind Nashashibi.
Hurvin Anderson’s paintings distil a sense of place. Encompassing both portraiture and landscape, his work shifts between the representation of a place and the reality of it.
Andrea Büttner works across print, installation and painting. Her multifaceted works explore poverty and value, and the ways that we communicate these ideas to each other.
Lubaina Himid’s work uses colourful, decorative motifs, referencing the political power of graphic language. Her artworks confront the sense of invisibility felt by people of the African diaspora.
Rosalind Nashashibi uses time in film to build a steady, often repetitive picture of everyday life, combining moments of movement and stillness.

Where and when can I see the Turner Prize 2017 exhibition?
This year’s Turner Prize will be held at Ferens Art Gallery from 26 September 2017 to 7 January 2018. The opening hours are:

Tuesday: 10am–5pm
Wednesday: 10am–5pm
Thursday: 10am–7.30pm
Friday: 10am–5pm
Saturday: 10am–5pm
Sunday: 11am–4.30pm
How do I get to Ferens Art Gallery?
Ferens Art Gallery is right in the city centre of Hull in Queen Victoria Square. It’s next door to the Maritime Museum and Hull City Hall.
Public transport
Hull bus and train station (Paragon Interchange) is a 10 minute walk away. The nearest bus stop is Monument Bridge on Carr Lane.
Parking
There are limited pay and display car parking bays near Ferens Art Gallery. There are a number of council car parks in the city centre however – for more information about these, see the Hull City Council website.
Cycling
The nearest cycle parking is on the right of the main entrance to Ferens Art Gallery, and on the corner of Carr Lane and Alfred Gelder Street. There is a secure covered cycle parking facility opposite, just outside Hull City Hall.
Do I need a ticket to visit the Turner Prize 2017 exhibition?
No, Turner Prize 2017 is free entry and no booking is required.

Can I bring a school or university group?
All school trips to Ferens Art Gallery during Turner Prize 2017 must be booked through Heritage Learning. You can contact them via heritagelearning@hcandl.co.uk
We expect the galleries to be busy, so booking in advance is essential to ensure the best possible experience for you and your students.
Specific time slots are available for schools and colleges for self-directed visits, every week day of the exhibition. We would recommend the following arrival times:

Are food and drink allowed in the gallery?
No, there is no food and drink allowed in the galleries.
However, meals, drinks and snacks are available from Ferens Café, located at the rear of the building. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in Hull City Centre – we recommend trying a local restaurant or pub during your visit. Take a look at our Food & Drink guide for some ideas.
