War at sea in the Middle Ages; what is known about weapons and tactics?’ – Dr Susan Rose (Roehampton University)

In this seminar, Dr Susan Rose will attempt to uncover the reality of war at sea in this period lying behind the beautiful stylised images found in illuminated manuscripts of medieval chronicles.

She will discuss the differences between galley warfare in the Mediterranean fought by largely oar-powered ships and that involving fleets mainly composed of vessels under sail in Northern waters.

The technical limitations of ships at the time and problems of ship-handling, the developments in weaponry (both successful and perhaps rather fanciful) and in ship design enabled the famous fleet engagements of the seventeenth century and beyond.

Blaydes House was built around 1740 as the home and business premises of the Blaydes family. The family included shipbuilders, shipowners, merchants and local political figures who played a leading part in the commercial and civic life of eighteenth-century Hull. The house, with its elegant panelled rooms and sweeping carved staircase, demonstrates the prosperity and self-confidence of the town’s mercantile elite. It is a typical Georgian merchant’s house, among the most impressive of several such buildings that have survived on the High Street. The house has been sympathetically restored, with period colour schemes. Since 2001 Blaydes House has been the home of the University of Hull’s Maritime Historical Studies Centre.
