Whales in a peepshow? Boxes hiding history? That’s the plan for one of the exhibitions at Humber Street Gallery, presented by two Rotterdammers, Niek Hilkmann and Mathijs van Oosterhoudt.

Niek Hilkmann is a twenty-first century polymath with a background in art history, media design, musicology and natural history. Mathijs van Oosterhoudt is an artist that engages critically with the political landscape of media, exploring the direct and indirect social and cultural influences of optical technology.

During their residency at HSG in Hull (an historical whaling port) Niek Hilkmann and Mathijs van Oosterhoudt will create a miniature whaling exhibition, in which the paradox of the whale being both a culturally abstracted creature, and a lucrative natural resource. In addition they will work together with the Natural History Museum of Rotterdam to examine the cultural framing and exploitation of whales throughout the ages. The whole exhibition is showcased with the help of handcrafted peepshow boxes.

Exhibition times: Friday-Saturday: 2pm-11pm. Sunday: 12pm-6pm.

Presentation times:  Friday: 4:30m-5:30pm, 8pm-9pm. Saturday: 3:30m-4:30pm, 7pm-8:30pm. Sunday: 1:30pm-3pm.
