Summary

Whirlwind Recordings was established in 2010 by recording artist, freelance bassist, composer, bandleader & producer Michael Janisch, a US native who relocated to London in 2005 and created the label specifically for the worldwide release of Purpose Built, his debut solo album.

Since then the label has grown considerably to become one of the premier new independent labels in the world, releasing an eclectic catalogue of adventurous and visceral music that spans genres, is rooted in originality and has key emphasis on the improvised. The artists on the label range from established masters to guiding lights of their generation to undiscovered stars in the making. Whirlwind’s catalogue features over 90 releases as of mid–2017 and has been praised for discovering new and exciting talent from the UK and subsequently providing them a platform to reach a global audience with their music.

Simon Purcell’s “Red Circle”

Simon Purcell: piano, compositions
Julian Siegel: saxophones
Chris Batchelor: trumpet
Steve Watts: double bass
James Maddren: drums

“An expansive, clever record… the thoughtful intricate themes are mysteriously inviting, organically accommodating the players’ characterful contributions… they generate a great ensemble vibe with the sort of relaxed intensity that can only come with genuine chemistry. Purcell leads and plays with a benign wisdom.”

Robert Mitchell: Solo Left Hand Piano

“Astounding virtuoso work from Mitchell.”
The Times

“Brilliant solo album of left-handed compositions.”
The Independent

“… A very important influential musician”
Gilles Peterson

“Mitchell frequently turned jazz piano logic on its head, comping with his right hand and soloing with the left, and even embarking on a piece written solely for left hand which somehow didnít scrimp on melodic invention or variety”

Michael Janisch

Jason Palmer: trumpet
Rez Abbasi: guitar
John O’Gallagher: alto sax
Michael Janisch: bass
Clarence Penn: drums

For this European tour Michael Janisch has assembled a stellar new quintet comprising some of the United States’ most exciting performers/improvisers: with the Pakistani/ American guitarist Rez Abbasi – rapidly emerging as one of today’s major new voices on his instrument – alongside Grammy-winning alto saxophonist John O’Gallagher (Joe Henderson, Maria Schneider), trumpeter Jason Palmer (Herbie Hancock, Kurt Rosenwinkel), and the brilliant drummer Clarence Penn (Michael Brecker, Stanley Clarke).  This is a project not to be missed; artists of this calibre are usually only seen in the largest concert halls in the UK or at major festivals.

 “Awesomely virtuosic double bass”…The Guardian

“A commanding bassist, who brings a sinewy thrust to the ensemble with masterful agility.”…Downbeat Magazine
