‘Why couldn’t they be like we were’ is a celebration of the cultural history of the Marfleet area of the city seen through the eyes of its teenagers – past & present. A community partnership spearheaded by Local Works Ltd., the project will gather teenage experiences from 1947, 1957, 1967 & 2017, exploring fashion, music, school, dancing, food & life experiences.

As part of the Roots & Routes season, the project will focus on the transition of the area. Young people will work with the older generations to record their experiences of what it was like to be a teenager, with displays & events to celebrate each decade.

Saturday 9 December, 4pm-7pm. Free. St Stephens Neighbourhood Centre.

The final event in the Why Couldn’t They Be Like We Were? project, featuring lots of Christmas magic!

For the kids, there’s an enchanted Christmas Fairy trail, where guests can search for tiny elf and fairy doors in a decorated garden before sprinkling magic fairy dust and creating their very own door to take home. What’s more, the whole family can create their very own wish decoration to place on the Christmas wish tree, sing along to carols and get involved in Christmas games and stories. For the adults, there’ll be chance to get crafty with glass decorating, a selection of Christmas stalls and you can end your visit with a steaming cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate.

Saturday 26 August, 12pm-3pm. Free. Marfleet Children’s Centre.

Looking back at Marfleet and some of its residents in 1970s, this event will feature a 70s inspired fashion show with vintage traders and models, vintage fashion stalls, live music with songs of the decade and children’s activities including a bouncy castle. A slideshow of photographs and video will showcase life in the area at the time – see if you can spot yourself amongst them and bring back those fond memories!

Saturday 28 October, TBC, St Stephens Neighbourhood Centre.

Celebrate the culture of the Marfleet area in the 1980s with this family Halloween style event. More details to follow.
