The concert opens with Weber’s magical overture, Oberon, before the exceptionally expressive pianist, Francesco Piemontesi, performs Beethoven’s ‘emperor of a concerto’.
Then we hear two contrasting preludes from Lohengrin – the first, serene, and the second, energetic. In a glorious climax, Sir Mark Elder guides us through the intimacy and ceremony of Wagner’s great comic masterpiece, Die Meistersinger.
