The Visually Impaired Performers and friends from Northern Academy of Performing Arts have produced a variety of shows over the last five years. They were part of the 2017 City of Culture Community Arts project, with Do You See What I Mean, which was written and devised by members of the group.
Sea Fever is their latest offering and fuses together spoken word, music and song. It’s a mixture of classic and modern material with additional pieces written by members of the company. The theme was chosen because of the links to Hull’s sea faring tradition that many of the company members have.
The VIPs are fortunate to be joined in the performance by Kenneth and Jean Shakesby. Jean is one of the original Lil’s lasses and in 1968 marched with Lil Bilocca in her campaign to improve working conditions for Hull trawler men. Ken is an ex trawler skipper who was on the trawler, Kingston Garnet, when the Ross Cleveland was lost. Ken will be reading extracts from his new book, From Schooldays to the Arctic Circle and Beyond.
