Mystery Jets: A Billion Heartbeats

All great albums start from a unique perspective. But try a window on the Strand, in an abandoned office block, overlooking the kind of political upheaval London hasn’t seen in a generation. Mystery Jets’ Blaine Harrison was living as a property guardian right round the corner from Trafalgar Square when found himself witness to an entire year of protests. Every weekend from January 2017 on, people were marching for a different cause: “In the space of six months it was Black Lives Matter, the huge ‘Our NHS’ march, Unite for Europe,” he recalls. “Then the solidarity sleep-out organised by Help Refugees, where we slept in Whitehall for the night… The protestors would wake me up in the morning. I’d just walk down and join in.”

Over the course of that year, Mystery Jets’ sixth long-player, A Billion Heartbeats, was born. “This album wasn’t about making pointed opinions,” says Blaine. “It was about being a mirror for what’s going on, reflecting back the way people are feeling.”

The first single Screwdriver is an uncompromising look at the rise of the rebranded alt-right in the UK, built around a powerfully positive message: “Fight them with love / then the world will be ours”. The haunting, melodic Hospital Radio counteracts images of those “missing in action” or “staring at the ceiling” with a battle cry of “our blood is not for sale”. By turns tender and fierce, abstract and full of classic rock energy, A Billion Heartbeats achieves a balance of passion, fear and hope. In a sense, it’s not just their “state of the nation” record but their “state of a generation” record too.

Music Plega

A journey through the clarinet’s diverse interaction with twentieth and twenty-first century chamber ensemble music, this concert showcases Rae W. Todd with the fantastic Berkeley Ensemble. As part of Rae’s PhD in Performance, which investigates professional performers’ experiences of ‘play’ (‘plega’) within the context of chamber ensemble music-making, he will perform two 45-minute recitals. The first recital will feature the atmospheric and spell-binding composition Quatour Pour la fin de Temps by Olivier Messiaen (1940) and the second will include virtuosic works written by Stravinsky, Milhaud, Gershwin and Henryson.

Hailed as ‘an instinctive collective’ (The Strad) the Berkeley Ensemble was formed with the aim of exploring little-known twentieth- and twenty first-century British chamber music alongside more established repertoire. It now enjoys a busy concert schedule performing throughout the UK and abroad, and is also much in demand for its inspiring work in education.

Engaging new audiences, most importantly through education, is central to the ensemble’s activities. Recent collaborations have included schemes with PRS for Music and Tŷ Cerdd, supporting emerging composers and generating new works. The group is also ensemble-in-residence at the University of Hull and Ibstock Place School, and runs an annual chamber music course in Somerset

Svarc Hanley Longhawn

‘Leeds Guitarist Nik Svarc, Drummer-Percussionist Steve Hanley and Keyboardist Martin Longhawn join the dots between Jazz-Rock and Hammond funk, discovering an interesting angle for an old-school sound mixed with some hyper-catchy hooks and grooves’ – JAZZWISE.

‘Rather than swinging standards…ambient grooves, post-rock jams and Krantz-esq solos are the order of the day. Svarc demonstrates his technical command of the guitar once again and his uses a variety of sounds to great effect.’ – Jazz In York.

‘When you listen to good jazz, at least when I do, one type of sound that I tend to gravitate to would be the organ trio format. It has to have a certain funk to it. It definitely needs to “go out there”, and most assuredly needs to have a good guitar. This Organ Trio has all of these elements, and more. They do a great job conjuring up those old thoughts of the 60′s, and Jimmy Smith. Music should be enjoyed, and when people are there to simply watch, not talk, you know your battle with the crowd is over.’- Tony Rice

14:30-16:30: Masterclass for University of Hull students. Observers welcome.
