The University of Hull is at the heart of the city and the region, providing a cutting edge educational experience for 18,000 students a year. The academic portfolio contains 50 disciplines across the arts and humanities, business, education, health, the sciences and the social sciences. Established in 1927, we are the 14th oldest University in England and we have inspired the nation’s culture for years.
Our campus has a rich seam of cultural heritage: Rosie Millard, Chair of Hull’s City of Culture company, Marianne Elliot, (Theatre Director: Warhorse), Darren Henley, Chief Executive of Arts Council England and many more are Graduates. The University Librarian Philip Larkin, widely regarded as one of England’s greatest poets, worked here for many years, Anthony Minghella (Film Director: The English Patient), Sir Leslie Martin (Architect: The Royal Festival Hall) and Sir Andrew Motion (former Poet Laureate) have taught here. We are proud to continue to support culture in all its diversity, from children science experience at Freedom Festival and band stages at Humber Street Sesh, to partnerships with Opera North.
During 2017, the University of Hull will produce and host a spectacular programme of events. With investments on campus including a multi-million pound state-of-the-art performance and cinema space, cutting-edge recording studios and a TV editing suite, they will make the University one of the outstanding venues in the city.
2017 will provide students with an unforgettable experience, the chance to study in the UK’s City of Culture. Aside from experiencing an unmissable 365-day programme, students will have unrivalled CV-boosting opportunities from performing on stage and producing backstage, marketing and engineering the ceremonies, to welcoming people from around the world.
As the exclusive academic research partner for Hull 2017, we’ll explore and debate the transformative power of culture. Our Institute for Research on Culture and the Creative Industries will explore the social and economic impact of culture and the 2017 events, creating a lasting legacy.
