Meet Hull the Music City

Discover the Sound of the City

Hull has long been a place where music matters. Home to iconic bands such as The Housemartins, Everything But The Girl, and Fine Young Cannibals, the city has been the starting point for sounds that travelled far beyond the Humber. Today, that legacy is alive in a new generation of artists including Coldplays support act Chiedu Oraka — all pushing Hull’s music into new territory.

Explore Hull’s musical roots and its living soundtrack through the Reveal Trail, a self-guided walking experience narrated by Lucy Beaumont. This immersive trail blends comedy, storytelling and music to reveal the places, people and performances that shaped Hull’s sound — past and present.

Iconic Venues

Hull’s music scene thrives across venues of all sizes — from DIY clubs to national stages.

The legendary New Adelphi Club, a modest terraced house turned music mecca, has seen early shows from the likes of Oasis, Radiohead, and Pulp. Its low ceilings and loyal crowds continue to provide a launchpad for local talent and a rite of passage for bands on the rise.

On a larger scale, Connexin Live (formerly Bonus Arena) welcomes global artists to Hull, bringing huge live experiences to the city centre. From chart-toppers to classic rockers, it’s where major names meet massive Hull audiences.

Other beloved venues — Social, Polar Bear Music Club, O’Rileys, The Welly Club, and performances inside Trinity Market — ensure that live music is never far away. Whether you’re after intimate acoustic sessions or bass-heavy club nights.

Music Nights & Festivals

Hull’s musical calendar is bursting with energy year-round.

Weekly fixtures like Trinity Live transform Thursday nights in the city into a showcase of local talent, great food and free entertainment or The Polar Bear for the Tuesday Sesh, which provides a platform for the creative community of Hull, in a 200-capacity venue, with club night post bands being a famous haunt for Hull folk that aren’t scared of a Wednesday morning hangover. In the summer months, Humber Street Sesh turns the Fruit Market into a massive multi-stage celebration of homegrown music talent, attracting tens of thousands to the UKs largest unsigned bands festival.

Other highlights include Freedom Festival, where global sounds meet street performance, and The Big Malarkey Festival, which brings music, storytelling and creativity to young audiences and families.

From underground gigs to outdoor stages, free shows to full-on festivals, Hull is alive with sound every day of the week.
