Accessibility Statement – Visit Hull

Accessibility Statement

Accessibility Statement

Visit Hull – Hull city Council is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This accessibility statement applies to visithull.org.

Compliance status

We are committed to making our website accessible to everyone and are making ongoing changes.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliance listed below.

Non Accessible Content

Keyboard Navigation

Some elements, like the ‘X’ button in the search tab, cannot be accessed using a keyboard. This affects multiple pages across the site.

Text Resizing

When text is zoomed to 200%, some content inside the hamburger menu becomes unavailable because scrolling doesn’t work properly.

Responsive Design (Reflow)

At 400% zoom or on mobile view, the page does not reflow correctly. Content in the search tab and hamburger menu can be cut off or hard to use.

Images of Text

There are several images containing text, such as those under ‘What’s On’ and “Our monthly Newsletter” on the Things To Do page. Images of text can become blurry when magnified and are harder to customize for accessibility.

Pause, Stop, Hide

Moving content like the ‘It Must Be Hull’ video, the video behind ‘Hull Maritime’, and carousels such as ‘Local Tips’ cannot be paused, stopped, or hidden. This can be distracting and difficult for some users.

Colour Contrast

Some text does not have enough contrast against its background, making it hard to read. Examples include:

  • Blue text on white (e.g., FILM HULL, Invest Hull, email addresses)
  • White text on blue or pale pink
  • Green text on white (e.g., Conferences)
  • Grey text in the footer (e.g., ©2025 Visit Hull – Hull City Council – All Rights Reserved)

Page Titles

Some pages do not have clear, descriptive titles. Titles help users understand the purpose of a page quickly.

Links

Certain links, like one in the ‘Local Tips’ carousel, do not have accessible text. Screen readers cannot identify where these links lead.

Buttons

The search button does not have an accessible name, making it unclear for screen reader users.

Focus Visibility

When navigating with a keyboard, some focused elements are hidden behind pop-ups or menus, especially at 200% and 400% zoom. This includes:

  • Cookie settings pop-up obscuring interactive elements
  • Search tab covering links and buttons while tabbing
  • Hamburger menu items hidden when the search tab is expanded

Our Commitment

We are actively working to fix these issues to meet WCAG 2.1 standards and ensure a better experience for all users. This includes the development of a new website platform with will be launched early in 2026.
