Smith & Nephew
As a major employer in Hull, we at Smith & Nephew are proud and excited to partner with Hull UK City of Culture 2017.
Smith & Nephew has a history dating back 160 years to the family enterprise of Thomas James Smith, who opened a small pharmacy in Hull in 1856. On his death in 1896, his nephew Horatio Nelson Smith took over the management of the business.
Today, Smith & Nephew is a public limited company headquartered in the UK, doing business in over 100 countries and employing around 15,000 people. Every day, we support healthcare professionals by taking a pioneering approach to the design of our advanced medical products and services, by securing wider access to our diverse technologies for more customers globally, and by enabling better outcomes for patients and healthcare systems.
Recently we’ve invested £50m in our Hull site, bringing new products lines, building flood defences and creating a global centre for research and development for our Wound Management products. We plan to open our new state-of-the-art laboratory suite by the end of 2016.
We are proud to supporting this transformational year – the Hull City of Culture 2017 – demonstrating that Hull and East Yorkshire is an attractive and exciting place to live and work, both for our own employees and the wider residents. Hull 2017 will help create a better future for a city that is such a significant part of our own past, present and commercial future.
