Opera North: The Magic Flute

Enter an enchanted world and join Prince Tamino on his quest to rescue Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, held captive by Sarastro, the Priest of the Sun.
Tamino is accompanied by Papageno, a bird-catcher, who is also on a quest – to find himself a wife, his Papagena. But their mission soon becomes a journey of discovery, for nothing – not even Day and Night – is quite as it first appears.

The Magic Flute is a delight for audiences of all ages. Mozart’s miraculous music mixes popular songs with stirring choruses, arias of heart-melting beauty with dazzling vocal fireworks. Celebrating the power of music and imagination to reconcile seeming opposites, James Brining’s production is the ideal introduction to opera for everyone.

“… it’s a good-looking show, colourfully designed by Colin Richmond and making imaginative use of Douglas O’Connell’s video” – The Telegraph.

Opera North – Simon Boccanegra

Set in 14th-century Genoa, Simon Boccanegra is a gripping story of political intrigue and personal tragedy.

With music full of dark-hued grandeur and excitement, Opera North’s first ever performances of Simon Boccanegra follow Opera North’s acclaimed concert stagings of large-scale Italian classics such as Turandot and Aida. It promises to be an unmissable event.

At its core is a decades-long feud between political rivals: Simon Boccanegra, former pirate and man of the people, and Jacopo Fiesco, a leading member of the nobility. But these enemies are bound together by the strongest of family ties: one is the father and the other the grandfather of the same woman, Amelia.

Premiered in 1857, Verdi revised the opera in 1881 with the librettist Arrigo Boito, with whom he later collaborated on his final masterpieces, Otello and Falstaff. Together they crafted a Shakespearean drama of love, loss and reconciliation which, in its celebrated Council Chamber scene, contains Verdi’s most impassioned plea for peace and unity.
Sung in Italian with English subtitles.

Stage4Beverley: The Bandura

Anastasiya Voytyuk, is a singer and promoter of Ukrainian folk culture and a virtuoso of the Bandura – a Ukrainian traditional instrument.

Anastasiya collaborated with many different musicians and artists and combined the Bandura with percussion, keyboards, saxophone, guitar, clarinet, experimental brass, electronic music, tabla, zheng and many other instruments. She became the author of soundtracks for several plays and performances with which she travelled to Canada and the Lebanon. She has toured many countries of Europe and the World with the Bandura as part of various bands. In the Summer of 2023 she was nominated to take part in Global Music Workshop in the New England Conservatory in Boston, USA, where she collaborated with 70 musicians from all over the world.

Anastasiya leads the Ukrainian folk fusion band Troye Zillia. They give a second breath to Ukrainian folk songs from various regions of Ukraine, releasing the archaic polyphonic singing in contemporary musical forms.

The work of Troye Zillia is a real fusion – the sounds of Bandura and singing with folk notes are accompanied by jazz drums, keyboards and synthesizers, and in the current incarnation also bass and clarinet. In the band’s repertoire you will find both lively and melancholy songs. Since its inception, the line-up has played several hundred concerts on the stages of Europe, North America and the Middle East, winning awards and distinctions at reviews and competitions, in the country and abroad. The last album (2019) entitled ENDORPHINS is a selection of Ukrainian songs about love from various regions of the country. The original sound, sophisticated ethno motifs and positive charge of compositions, mixed with driving styles of R&B, D&B, afro-cuban, jazz, create a special style of the album – folk fusion.

Stage4Beverley: The Beverley Handbell Ringers

THE BEVERLEY TOWN HANDBELL RINGERS

The Beverley Town Handbell Ringers was formed in February, 1981 and, by the loan of a set of old disused bells from Elland in West Yorkshire, were able to set about raising the funds to buy the present ‘long set’ purchased in August, 1983.

They play on a set of 137 Whitechapel bells which cover a range of five chromatic octaves. Using some of the 60 duplicated and triplicated bells permits the execution of the fast chromatic runs.

The ten ringers, four treble, four tenor and two bass, ring ‘off table’ in a traditional ‘Yorkshire Style’ and are directed and conducted by John Atkinson.

At the festival they will be performing a concert with an opportunity for audience participation and an insight into the bells and the ringing style.

They will be playing a varied selection of light classical and modern pieces, each lasting no longer than five minutes many of which are well known marches and waltzes.

Saturday Concert Series: Piano Excursions in the 20th Century

These three pieces offer a look at the artistic and aesthetic concerns of three composers in the 20th Century.

America, 1924
Charles Ives – Three Quarter-Tone Pieces for Two Pianos
Charles Ives is more known for his wonderfully evocative Places in New England, but here we see him exploring the newer world of microtonal music. The pianos are tuned a quarter tone apart, so when played together, as a duet, we are offered a far wider palette of colours and sonorities.

Germany, 1954–61
Karlheinz Stockhausen – Klavierstucke X
Karlheinz Stockhausen remains one of the most influential composers of the 20th Century. In his Klavierstucke X, the boundaries of performance technique and music composition are stretched, and advises the pianist to wear half-fingered mitts to aid the performance of ‘cluster glissandi’.

Malta, 1950–60
Charles Camilleri – Times of Day
Finally the Maltese composer Charles Camilleri offers us, in Times of Day, a journey through a day filled with influences from as far a field as Asia, Africa and France, lit with the colours of the Mediterranean.

Performers: Nigel Bartram, Stanislaw Hansel, Simon-Mary Vincent and John Stead.
