Hullarious Fringe. The Bleeding Obvious

Join us for The Hullarious Fringe with The Bleeding Obvious

What happens when you tumble out of the big pink closet and across the LGBTQ+ rainbow in a sprawling heap? Well, life is never quite as straight as it seems!

The Bleeding Obvious has one member: Yorkshire lesbian Jessica Rowbottom who stars in a one-woman show describing her own coming-out experience through original songs and tales which are sometimes funny, occasionally poignant, frequently emotional and most definitely queer.

As she tries to find labels for her own gender identity and sexuality, Jessica recounts unexpected reactions from family and friends, dating disasters, growing up through Section 28 in the 1980s, dealing with a creepy admirer who may (or may not) be called Dave, straight people at Pride, transgender toilet panics and more.

It might even be the only show with the lyrics “demisexual panromantic polyamorous androgyne”!

Hullarious Fringe. David Ian: Mediocre Gay

Join us for The Hullarious Fringe with David Ian

When you grow up gay in a small town in nineties-Kent, it is easy to think that your sexuality is the reason you don’t fit in. You dream of what life will be like when you grow up, run away to the big city and find your people. You will finally know what it’s like to be normal. Hell, maybe you’ll even be popular.

But what happens when you make that journey – literally and metaphorically – and, shock horror, find that you still don’t fit in? Maybe your sexuality wasn’t the reason you felt left out at all? What then?

In his debut solo show, stand-up comedian, David Ian explores the expectations of being a gay man and how he struggles to meet them, the disappointment of never quite knowing where the party is and if you will ever truly belong. How can you be both too gay and not gay enough at the same time?

Expect witty one-liners and intelligent jokes woven into heartwarming storytelling in this 60 minute romp through one gay man’s journey to be the best little boy in the world that will make you laugh, think and reflect on your own sense of belonging.

Hullarious Fringe. Louise Atkinson: Mates (WIP)

Join the Hull Comedy Festival for The Hullarious Fringe with a work in progress from Louise Atkinson

You can never complete a night out with your friends unless someone has cried over their ex, you’ve all made a new best friend in the toilets that you’ll never see again, and you’ve done three laps of the bar looking for Lisa. Seriously though, where is she?

Our friends are our chosen family. From the happiest times to breaking up with friends, grab a pint (of wine) and Louise will recount some of her funniest memories. Hopefully we find Lisa.

My debut hour examines the role friendships play in our lives. We all have the same kind of friend in our life: thoughtful, energetic, vomit-over-a-bouncer after half a WKD. However, do we appreciate these relationships as much as any other?

I examine that it’s actually friendship that forms the basis of any relationship we have and how that can be amazing but also how, when it goes wrong, a friendship break up can happen – which are devastating, not spoken about very often, but also hilarious

The American stage version of the 1997 British film The Full Monty returns to Hull, for one week only.

This amateur production follows six unemployed Buffalo steelworkers, low on both cash and prospects, as they decide to present a strip act at a local club after seeing their wives’ enthusiasm for a touring company of Chippendales. As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, self-consciousness, and anxieties, they overcome their inner demons and find strength in their camaraderie.

Featuring original music and all the fun of the original film with book by Terrence McNally and score by David Yazbeck.

Presented under amateur performance rights, the last time this version of the show hit the New Theatre stage it sold out!
