The Dresser

The Dresser

This hilarious yet poignant play explores the relationship between two men who are inevitably, and at times reluctantly, co-dependent. As World War II rages, backstage in a provincial English theatre, an ageing, once-famous classical actor is troubled. Sir, the last in a dying breed of great English Shakespearean actors, is unwilling to take to the stage to deliver his renowned portrayal of King Lear. It falls to his faithful dresser Norman to rouse another great performance from him, to keep both the show and its star from falling apart.
The Dresser has been nominated for Olivier and Tony Awards as well as an Academy Award for the screenplay. Don’t miss this wonderful production of what is widely considered Ronald Harwood’s greatest play.

MAYOR AND JAMES

Across Britain from Shetland to Sark, and across the globe from Vancouver to Singapore, Simon Mayor and Hilary James have brought their special blend of dazzling musicianship.

If they have a speciality, it’s an ability to combine a truly diverse array of talents into a hugely entertaining stage show. There can’t be many performers who slide easily from a beautifully evocative Irish ballad into a mandolin and guitar version of Handel’s Arrival Of the Queen Of Sheba and then have the audience singing one of their own notorious comic songs, but it’s this wry humour and an easy, informal stage manner that holds it all together.

The duo’s musical diversity has led to an equally broad range of festival invitations from Henley Classical Music Festival (England) to the Stephen Leacock Humour Festival (Canada), the Vancouver Folk Festival and countless folk and Celtic festivals throughout the world.

Standing Too Close On Our Own In The Dark

We invite you to join us for an evening of happy-sad theatre and fantastic live music curated by brand-new theatre company Just Club, who will headline the event with their show Standing Too Close On Our Own In the Dark.

15TH JANUARY

DOORS 7PM
FIRST ACT 7.30PM
HEADLINE 8.30PM

£5 OTD

Standing Too Close On Our Own In the Dark is a half-gig, half-play, half-stand up set (yes, that’s three halves) which is rousing, affable, and uses stories based on real experiences in a journey which is as hopeful and vibrant as it is melancholic. In the romantic tragedy (or tragic romance, it’s up to you) an unnamed poet explores the bittersweet sensation of being lonely and in love, the damage that depression and anxiety has caused his psyche, and waxes lyrical about stolen bikes and ex-girlfriends’ dads. An uplifting, poetic gig-theatre event, the quiet rock and roll of Standing Too Close effervesces with the endearing awkwardness of early-20s social discomfort and revels in what it’s like to be in love with a girl and the world, while celebrating the acknowledgement of the universal weight we all have on our shoulders sometimes.

Standing Too Close is a new play by recent Hull Drama graduate Jake Marsden which has helped define Just Club’s aims to make “happy-sad” productions which boldly and unashamedly make the unspoken conversational and relatable, with an air of mysticism; interchangeable and improvised elements make the show an exciting Frankenstein’s monster of dialogue and heart-rending ballad intent on bringing audiences to equal amounts elation and devastation.

Further announcements will be made regarding the poets and performers who will be joining us for a happy-sad evening. Keep an eye out on the Just Club social media pages for more!

Luca Rutherford’s Political Party

Do you ever get confused or overwhelmed by politics?

Do you ever feel like the only way to make a difference is to change everything?

Do you ever think that if you can’t change everything immediately there’s no point trying?

Luca reached a point where thinking about politics made her want to lie down on the pavement and not get up. Instead of doing this she is throwing a party. A political party. There will be drinks, dancing and eggs! No experts. No big words.

This is a show about getting messy with the messiness of politics.
