Drawing its title from a song in ‘Sunday in the Park with George’, this musical celebrates Sondheim’s incomparable career in musical theatre.
The world of theatre is a place where stories come to life before your eyes. They are also full to the brim of stereotypical roles in a hyper-real way that would never really happen in the real world.
But theatre’s different. It’s a sprinting, fast, exaggerated world – and it’s welcome.
On the set of a musical you need only look at the personalities behind the characters to discover that what may appear a smooth running show on the surface, is fraught with problems.
Renegade! The Musical explores the problems of lack of money, people and opportunity, clashing personalities, over-confidence, under-confidence, pretence and fame in a comically satirical way. In a play that combines Calamity Jane with The Play that Goes Wrong, strap yourself into the saddle and brace for a rootin’ tootin’ ride of a lifetime. Yeee! Haaaa!
Hot on the heels of last year’s hit production Betty Blue Eyes, Hull’s Northern Academy of Performing Arts is back on the main stage at Hull Truck Theatre with this fabulous musical comedy.
The winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City when ‘moderns’, including a flapper named Millie Dillmount, were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, and rewriting the rules of love.
It’s 1922, and small-town girl Millie has just arrived in New York, ready to make her dreams come true. Millie’s plan is simple: find a job as a secretary for an eligible bachelor and then marry him. It doesn’t take long, however, for Millie’s “thoroughly modern” plan to go awry. Her villainous landlady, Mrs Meers, plots to kidnap Millie’s best friend and sell her into slavery in Hong Kong.
Her wealthy boss seems entirely uninterested in her flirtations and worst of all, the man with whom she falls head over heels in love doesn’t have a penny to his name!
This bright, funny, and charming comedy is packed with infectious musical numbers and energetic dance routines, making it the perfect show for all the family.
