Contains Strong Language
Absolutely Cultured is delighted to be partnering with the BBC and Wrecking Ball Press to produce the return of the national poetry and spoken word festival Contains Strong Language in late September.
The best of local, national and international poets, spoken word artists, comedians and musicians will be commissioned as part of this packed programme taking place in venues across the city. The festival will deliver a wide ranging, diverse programme to audiences enjoying the live experience in Hull, but also many more across the country via the BBC broadcasts.
As part of this exciting programme Absolutely Cultured is commissioning a special new site-specific piece, which will offer the audience a playful journey of discovery through the city, animated by poets, wordsmiths and artists.
Human Cargo
Human Cargo is an epic night of story and song, featuring two masters of the craft.
Storyteller and singer Matthew Crampton’s recent show The Transports won Five Stars from The Guardian, and now returns with a new adaptation of his acclaimed book Human Cargo: Stories & Songs of Emigration, Slavery and Transportation.
An inspired collaboration unites Matthew with American traditional music legend Jeff Warner. Together, they cast fresh light on human migration, giving voice to those actually aboard the slave ships and emigrant boats and, crucially, framing today’s hot topic with history and humanity.
Each performance also features stories researched locally, as part of the Parallel Lives project. Expect a rich and entertaining evening.

Sing and Tell with Hekima
Join Hull’s very own Hekima, telling African stories through song and spoken word.
Places for Sing and Tell with Hekima are free, but limited.
If you have any specific access needs for this performance, please contact team@backtoours.co.uk.
