Inclusive and rooted in our communities, with collaboration at its heart, it’s a place where you can showcase your creativity, connect with partners and audiences, or find support and inspiration.
It’s here to understand our great city’s shared history, our present, and to help us all work together on our shared future. To celebrate successes and the accessible spaces that are lifelines for many in our diverse communities. To shine a light on creativity, to share knowledge, encourage growth and to help create space for the aspiring culture makers among us.
Our shared culture and heritage has been identified as one of six key priorities set out in Hull’s 10-year Community Plan for 2024-2034, which was developed after extensive consultation with the people of Hull.
Together, we’ll continue building on our proud heritage as a maritime city; and as a city that has long delivered quality cultural activity, one which held the title of UK City of Culture 2017, and that, thanks to you, our unique cultural communities, will always be a city of culture.
This also means building on existing investment, urban regeneration, health and wellbeing, and overall quality-of-life benefits for people living, working, volunteering and studying in Hull, as well as those who are visiting. These were identified in the Cultural Transformations independent evaluation of Hull’s year as a UK City of Culture (pub. 2019, updated 2021).
And they are clear as we once again unite as a city to back the current bid for UNESCO Creative City status in 2025. This award aims to encourage cooperation “among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development”, with tangible benefits for members of the city’s diverse music scene, from important grassroots live music venues such as The Adelphi and Social, to Hull Music Service – which teaches over 5,000 children and young people in schools and colleges, and provides groups, choirs, ensembles, bands and orchestras for all age. If successful, benefits could include access to a network of almost 300 other Cities of Music worldwide.
A number of flagship Hull cultural organisations have received national recognition and Arts Council funding to support and expand their work delivering outstanding creative and cultural opportunities.
A national portfolio organisation (NPO’s) is a group of arts and cultural organisations in England that receive regular funding from Arts Council England (ACE). They are part of ACE’s investment in creativity and culture across the nation. In Hull we have several NPO’s, and these are:
