Community engagement part of Discover Dance opportunities this summer from dance workshops to performance. Find out how to get involved!

 Freedom Festival are offering the chance to take part in Parade- The Big Wheel

What is it?

Parade is a large traveling show with a giant wheel powered by five performers and a community cast of local participants, celebrating individuality and our shared life experiences. You can find their trailer here: PARADE TRAILER

What will you be doing?

Workshop leaders and participants will work together to create the content, making it a collaborative experience. The sessions will focus on easy, inclusive group movement activities like:

  • Body percussion
  • Clapping and rhythm dance
  • Waving handkerchiefs as props
  • Upper body gestures that show welcome, greeting, and support

All activities will take place around the Giant Wheel, adding to the shared energy of the performance.

When will it be and how long will you need to give?

You’ll need to attend a workshop in the week before the festival (week commencing Monday 25 August) and be available for at least one show.

Freedom Festival began in 2007 and was inspired by the reformist legacy of William Wilberforce and the wider abolitionist movement. In 2013 they were incorporated as a charitable trust and since then, have undergone a significant transformation to better present, in public space, extraordinary artistic programmes rooted in the thematic exploration of democracy, freedom and human rights.

 

Hull Dance will be running Move Together “Move Now” workshops over the summer holidays at youth centres near you.

What is it?

Move Now offers the chance for young people 11 – 18 years to try some new dance moves but also meet friends and socialise. It is part of Move Together which is an inclusive framework supporting pathways in dance.

The workshops taking place are at:

Back to Ours “Sharrabang”

What is it?

Young people from Gen Z Dance Crew will be performing at Back to Ours “Sharrabang” which returns Saturday 5 June, 11am – 4.30pm and Sunday 6 July, 11am – 5pm.

Where is it?

The tour comes to bus stops near you in the Greatfield, Preston Road, Derringham, Woldcar Road, Thornton, Orchard Park and Southcoates areas of Hull.

There will be a bus full of surprise performers and Back to Ours fun heading your way.

Gen Z Dance Crew involve young people from St Michael’s Youth Project and Child Dynamix and is led by Holly Gibbs, Dance in Company.

Dance in Company is a community dance project delivering accessible performances and opportunities.
