A spectacular new exhibition is transforming Hull’s beloved Ferens Art Gallery into a mesmerising digital playground – and it promises to be a hit with visitors of all ages. Microworld transforms parts of the gallery into a vibrant, technicolour playground of digital life-forms, where art responds to you.
Created by renowned UK digital artists Genetic Moo, Microworld is not your typical art exhibition. It’s alive. As you move through the space, large-scale interactive projections burst into motion, reacting to your gestures and inviting you to create, explore and play.
Expect to be surrounded by glowing sea creatures, abstract patterns and ambient sounds that shift and shimmer as you explore. Look closely and you might spot a few familiar shapes – lions, skulls, fish trails, and even references to The Deep – all cleverly inspired by pieces in the Ferens’ own permanent collection. It’s a thoughtful and playful nod to Hull’s heritage, seamlessly woven budding scientists and curious minds, the Microlab offers a specially designed sensory space where younger visitors can delve even deeper. Here, children can examine and interact with the exhibition’s unusual digital creatures, learning through hands-on play, observation and discovery.
Best of all, Microworld is designed for all ages. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a curious child, or someone looking for something new and inspiring to do in Hull, this is a chance to dive into a unique world where art and science collide.
With a packed programme of events planned throughout the school holidays, including artist-led workshops and free family-friendly activities, Microworld promises to be one of Hull’s must-see cultural highlights this summer.
Microworld will be on display at the Ferens Art Gallery from 24 May until 7 September 2025 and entry is free. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm and Sundays 11am to 4pm.
