The Orchestra of Opera North presents the Viennese Whirl.
A New Year celebration like no other, conductor Justin Brown masterfully guides a traditional musical trip through Austria-Hungary with a glittering world of waltzes, polkas, marches and song.
See out the old year and welcome in the new with a celebratory concert from Yorkshire’s symphony orchestra; the Orchestra of Opera North. This Viennese-inspired afternoon programme includes much-loved music, including the ever-popular Blue Danube. A sparkling musical journey through some of the finest music from the Strauss family, as well as other classical masterpieces from the giants of the Austrian music scene is a must for your diary and a wonderful addition to your New Year festivities.
A Performance of Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and Howard Goodall’s “Eternal Light – A Requiem”.
Vivaldi’s “Gloria” needs little introduction, and is one of the most popular works in the classical choral repertoire. Vivaldi was employed for many years at an orphanage school in Venice, where he composed the Gloria amongst an enormous quantity of music during the early part of the 18th century. The orphanage had a renowned orchestra and choir, for whom most of his music was written.
“Eternal Light” is unlike the great Requiems of Mozart and Verdi, which offer prayers of salvation for the departed. Goodall’s work is intended to provide solace to the grieving.
Goodall writes that a modern Requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emptiness that accompanies the death of a loved one. The text is a mixture of liturgical Latin and English poetry.
This presentation of Messiah, given by the chamber choir and chamber orchestra of Invitatione, offers a contrast to the larger-scale performances more commonly seen. Staged in an intimate setting, and featuring local soloists Lucy Bates, Pam Waddington Muse, Robin Datta and James Dhonau, this performance seeks to renew the impact of a well-known work by emphasising the drama contained within the narrative of both text and music.

Under the direction of Jeffrey Makinson, Beverley Chamber Choir will perform:
- Brahms : A German Requiem
- Allegri : Miserere.
Featuring alongside the Beverley Chamber Choir are Johnathan and Tom Scott on Piano, Eleanor Garside as Soprano, and Robert O’Connell on Bass. The London Version is an arrangement by Brahms, with piano duet accompaniment for a performance by a small choir.
