Exploring Ancient Egypt- Disability Friendly Children’s Art Workshops

This is a disability and neurodiversity friendly children’s art workshop. The session runs over 2 hours, you can stay as long or as little as you want, and turn up at any time within this 2 hour window.

Tile making and sculpture was something the Ancient Egyptians were familiar with – and now is your chance to follow in their footsteps.

With the help of Lyn Grant from Fangfoss Pottery, children will have the chance to create their own ceramic tile based on the ancient Egypt exhibitions at the Ferens Art Gallery.

The tile will be fired and finished in the pottery and returned to the Ferens where it can be collected in about a month. We will let you know when your tile is available for collection.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please only book a ticket for each child attending the session. Accompanying adults DO NOT need to book a ticket.

it’s a joy to be here

Working Class Creatives Database presents it’s a joy to be here at 87 Gallery

It’s a joy to be here brings together six working-class artists from around the UK. Collectively, the artists draw on the history and traditional processes of craft whilst conceptually exploring the nuance of personal narrative. Many of the artists do this through the use of materials that are immediately available, reused or altered, together challenging stereotypes around gender, class and DIY approaches. By celebrating methods often associated with the working class, such as textiles and metalwork, the work provokes questions around the hierarchies within artistic practice.

When brought together these pieces open up a dialogue between artists from the North and the South of the UK and capture the power in the community, reinforcing the idea of there being strength in numbers. The exhibition considers how our experiences, working-class histories and identities can both set us apart and unite us. It also celebrates the collective joy of learning, loving, community and collaboration.

Exhibiting artists are Ben Brumpton (based in Manchester), Charlotte Cullen (based in Leeds), Daniel Fountain (based in Exeter), Grace Clifford (based in Sheffield) Sam Batley (based in Liverpool) and Stephanie Francis-Shanahan (based in London).

Hull CVS 40th Anniversary Funday

Hull CVS are celebrating our 40th anniversary with a free family fun day on Monday 24th October 2022, between 12noon and 3 PM at Johnny Whiteley Park. This includes FREE face painting by Fantastic Faces and various games, activities and music from local communities and groups throughout Hull.

Since the start of our journey over 40 years ago, we have supported many voluntary sector organisations in Hull and seen them flourish. With well over 1,000 voluntary groups and organisations in Hull alone, our city is certainly a wonderful place to live, with incredible communities and inspirational people throughout.

In recognition of the phenomenal work our voluntary sector does, we felt it was only fitting to celebrate not only our anniversary, but to showcase the sector as a whole; which has worked tirelessly, day in and day out, over the last 40 years and more to make our little corner of the world just that little bit better.

With this in mind, as part of our celebration, we aimed even bigger and better than any anniversary previous and with help from West Hull ARLF
C and local voluntary groups and organisations, we will be achieving just that.

So, if you’re interested in a free family fun day, with face painting, child-friendly games, activities and music, a free hotdog and a chance to win a £50 gift card.

On the day, we will be joined by the following organisations and groups, who each brings their own unique flair to show just how incredible and diverse Hull really is:

Creative Briefs
RSPCA Hull and East Riding Branch
Hull Red
PATT Foundation and Green Task Force
BackCare Ukulele
Goodwin / Fareshare Hull and Humber
Guide Dogs for the Blind
Yorkshire MESMAC
Fitmums and Friends
Hon Lok Senior Association
Emmaus Hull and East Riding
St Stephens Neighbourhood Centre
Prince’s Trust

We look forward to seeing you there!

Punch Above Your Weight – Punch Needle Workshop

In this full day workshop, Divya will talk you through her work (that is exhibited in the New Contemporaries Show in the Ferens Gallery) and show you the basics of punch needling. As a theme, Divya will give tribute to Hull’s very own Suffragist Dr Mary Murdoch. With her life work and activism as inspiration.

Ahead of the workshop Divya would like you to choose a phrase or an image that you think is important in your life or has given you courage and encouragement that you could tuft on to the fabric (A4 sized). You could have three colours in your design. The Gallery will provide the kit with the needle, threader, and yarn for the session.

*Punch needling has a long history dating back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Fine punch needle embroidery was used to decorate medieval garments and religious panels. Later, the technique was used with thicker yarns to make rugs. There is a long association of embroidery and female domesticity and Rozsika Parker’s book The Subversive Stitch traces the separation of the craft of embroidery from the Fine Arts as a major force in the marginalisation of women’s work. With craft taking on a renewed importance within the art landscape, working with threads and textiles is a happy medium that sits between painting and sculpture and craft.

Closer to the day Divya will share a Spotify link to all the confirmed participants so that you could add your choice of music to the list that can be played during the workshop.

Cost £45 +£1.50 booking fee (Lunch at Venue Hull Cafe included in the price)
