Tyrus by Pamela Tom

Tyrus is the moving, inspirational story of Tyrus Wong (1910-2016), who was, at various points in his long life, a Disney studio artist (where he worked on Bambi, 1942), a Film Production Illustrator at Warner Brothers (working on such films as Calamity Jane, 1953, Rebel Without a Cause, 1955, and The Wild Bunch, 1969), a fine art painter, a greeting card designer, a ceramics artist, and a kite designer.

But beyond his enormous contributions to Hollywood Cinema and American art, Wong’s story is also one of Chinese-American immigration during the 20th Century. Immigrating with his father to the USA in 1920 via Angel Island (the West Coast equivalent of Ellis Island), Wong had to find his way in a land where anti-Asian prejudice was rife. Yet he found love, family, and success, becoming one of the most influential Chinese-American artists in the USA. Tyrus, his life story, will be introduced by its director, writer, and producer, Pamela Tom.

This acclaimed short film, a co-commission with the Brontë Parsonage and RRU News based in Liverpool, is a powerful indictment of the treatment of poor women and their children. The film examines Heathcliff’s possible background through a poetic and poignant lens. It is unforgettable.

Hull Independent Cinema: THE HAPPY PRINCE

In a cheap Parisian hotel room Oscar Wilde lies on his death bed and the past floods back, transporting him to other times and places. Was he once the most famous man in London? The artist crucified by a society that once worshiped him? The lover imprisoned and freed, yet still running towards ruin in the final chapter of his life? Under the microscope of death he reviews the failed attempt to reconcile with his long suffering wife Constance, the ensuing reprisal of his fatal love affair with Lord Alfred Douglas and the warmth and devotion of Robbie Ross who tried and failed to save him from himself. From Dieppe to Naples to Paris freedom is elusive and Oscar is a penniless vagabond, always moving on, shunned by his old acquaintance, but revered by a strange group of outlaws and urchins to whom he tells the old stories – his incomparable wit still sharp. THE HAPPY PRINCE is a portrait of the dark side of a genius who lived and died for love in the last days of the nineteenth century.

Starring Rupert Everett, Colin Firth and Emily Watson.

Nominee, Berlin International Film Festival, Best Feature Film

“As a final, permanent showcase for a role Everett was born to play, then, THE HAPPY PRINCE does the job.” – Guy Lodge, Variety

“As a director, Everett is sometimes heavy-handed, but the performances, and the undeniable injustice of Wilde’s ordeal make for a tragedy worthy of its drama-loving subject.” – Helen O’Hara, TimeOut
