Francesca Beard is a Malaysian writer and performance poet who has been based in London for most of her adult life. She has been the writer-in-residence at the Tower of London and Hampton Court as well as working on her solo shows such as Chinese Whispers.

Zena-Edwards

ZENA EDWARDS, RUFUS MUFASA & ROSEANNA WATT

Raised in Tottenham, Zena Edwards is one the most unique performance poets to come out of London. She has two one-woman shows, Security (2009) and Travelling Light (2011), which both toured internationally to critical acclaim.

Roseanne Watt is a poet, filmmaker and musician from Shetland. Her work is inspired by the language and landscape of her home. Roseanne was the winner of the 2018 Edwin Morgan Poetry Award, and runner-up in the 2018 Aesthetica Creative Writing Award. Her first collection, Moder Dy, will be published by Polygon in May 2019 and features poetry written in both English and her native Shaetlan.

Literary activist, lyricist, rapper and performance art poet Rufus Mufasa is a pioneering participatory artist who advocates hip hop education and poetry development accessible to all. Solo album, Fur Coats From The Lion’s Den, wasdubbed a cultural highlight by Wales Arts Review. She writes trilingually in Welsh, English and Finnish, was cast in National Theatre Wales’ Storm 3, and is the first Future Generations poet in residence. Poetry collection, Flashbacks and Flowers, was recently highly commended in the Geoff Stevens Memorial Prize

CLARE POLLARD & IMTIAZ DHARKER

Imtiaz Dharker is a poet, artist and documentary film-maker. Awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2014, recipient of the Cholmondley Award and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, her collections include Purdah (Oxford University Press), I speak for the devil and The terrorist at my table. Her poems are on the British GCSE and A Level English syllabus, and she reads at Poetry Live! events to more than 25,000 students a year.

Clare Pollard’s first collection of poetry, The Heavy-Petting Zoo was written whilstshe was still at school, and received an Eric Gregory Award. It was followed byBedtime; Look, Clare! Look!; Changeling; and Incarnation. Clare’s co-translation ofThe Sea-Migrations received a PEN Translates award and was Sunday Times poetrybook of the year. She has also translated Ovid’s Heroines.

INDONESIAN POETRY EXCHANGE

An opportunity to discover new poems by living poets from East Indonesia and to understand and delve deeply into Indonesian culture through literature.

These sessions will combine readings of original poems by Mario F. Lawi, Irma Agryanti and Jamil Massa, along with lively conversations led by William Letford, Rufus Mufasa and Roseanne Watt alongside practical insights into tranforming and translating indigenous texts into the English language.

UK-Indonesia Indigenous Language Poetry Exchange is a collaboration between Makassar International Writers Festival in Indonesia and Contains Strong Language with the support of the British Council, Indonesia National Book Committee, Indonesia Ministry of Education and Culture, BBC and Wrecking Ball Press. It is a legacy programme of the Indonesia Market Focus at The London Book Fair 2019.

About Mario Lawi

Mario F. Lawi is involved in Komunitas Sastra Dusun Flobamora, Kupang. He is also managing translation site bacapetra.co. Published poetry include Ekaristi (2014), Lelaki Bukan Malaikat (2015), Keledai yang Mulia and Puisi-Puisi Lainnya (2019), and Bui Ihi: The Cooling of the Harvest and Other Poems (2019, translated in English by John McGlynn) and the translation Elegedia: elegi-elegi Pendek by Sulpicia.

About Irma Agryanti

Irma Agryanti was born in Mataram, Lombok. She graduated in English literature from Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, Yogyakarta and writes short-stories and poetry. She is published in Kompas, Tempo and others. Her poetry is included in the Makassar International Writers Festival selection From East Vol.1 (Gramedia, 2017). She was a nominee in Penghargaan Sastra Litera 2018 literature awards. Published poetry includes Requiem Ingatan (2013) and Anjing Gunung (Basabasi, 2018). She is involved in Komunitas Akarpohon Mataram.

About Jamil Massa

Jamil Massa is a poetry, short-story and essay writer. His writing has been published in Kompas, Koran Tempo and detik.com. His poetry is published in two anthologies: Sayembara Tebu (2016) and Pemanggil Air. His first compilation of short stories is Pembangkangan di Meja No.8. He lives in Gorontalo and manages Universitas Penulisan Kreatif Garasi Kata and Taman Baca Jendela Kata.

About William Letford

William Letford has worked as a roofer, on and off, since he was 15. Work includes the collections Dirt and Bevel.

CHIEDU ORAKA & JOSEPH COELHO

Chiedu Oraka was born and raised in North Hull and is of Nigerian descent. He is a rapper and pioneer of the alternative urban scene, fiercely proud of his HU6 postcode and hailed as the sound of northern working-class England. Chiedu has supported some of the UK’s leading Hip-Hop and Grime MCs.

Joseph Coelho won the CLiPPA for his debut collection Werewolf Club Rules in 2015.He is a writer, performer and co-founder of Word Pepper Theatre Company.Joeseph’s poems have been published in several anthologies. Second collectionOverheard in a Tower Block was shortlisted for the CLiPPA 2018

Jodie Langford is a rising star of the Hull poetry scene. Writing is Jodie’s outlet of expression and performing, writing, and public speaking is her passion. Jodie has participated in writing workshops at The Warren and collaborated with Joe Hakim on a new commission for The Verb, inspired by Francis Turner Palgrave.

BBC RADIO 3: THE VERB – TRANSLATION LAB

Ian McMillan is joined by poets William Letford and Clare Pollard to explore the pleasures, challenges and importance of translation alongside international writers.

Ian is a solo performer and writer, and also presents BBC Radio 3’s The Verb. ‘Words First’ is a talent development scheme that sees BBC Radio 1Xtra, BBC Asian Network and BBC Contains Strong Language come together to discover the best emerging spoken word artists in the UK. 1Xtra and Asian Network are two of the most important platforms for young voices, and ‘Words First’ has a strong record in discovering new lyrical talent.

After a UK-wide search, the finalists come together tonight to perform new workcreated during the scheme. Our Words First ambassador is writer and poet JudeYawson, and he has chosen the theme of connectivity in the modern age.

Poets from Indonesia, Maghreb and the UK come together in a unique poetry gala
focused on the use of indigenous language in literature. This is an opportunity for
a truly cross-cultural experience with readings of contemporary poetry and a rare
chance to see these poets share a stage.

The Children’s Bookshow with Michael Rosen

The Children’s Bookshow is coming to Hull for the very first time and are delighted to present the highly-acclaimed writer and poet Michael Rosen at Hull New Theatre on Wednesday 27th November. Michael is a passionate advocate for children’s reading and has been delighting audiences with The Children’s Bookshow for many years.

Aimed primarily at school groups, but also open to home-educating families, this hour-long performance is suitable for children aged 7 to 11. This will be an exhilarating and thoroughly entertaining experience of poetry in performance. Children will be delighted to watch and join in with Michael as he performs many of his well-known poems and leaves children laughing until their faces hurt! During his hour-long show, Michael expertly interweaves performance with tips and advice for children on how to write their own poetry, leaving even the most reluctant readers and writers buzzing with enthusiasm!

There will be an opportunity after the event to buy Michael’s books and have them signed by him.
